Abstract. Some aspects of the mechanism of action of detergents in motor oils are considered. It is shown that the change in the acid and base numbers of engine oil during operation in the engine is determined by the rate of consumption of the alkaline reserve (neutralization), which makes it possible to evaluate and predict the parameters of thermal and oxidative stability of the oil.
